The Printery Campaign
We are excited to announce a new collaboration between Central Print and The St. Louis Mercantile Library at UMSL that will further our mission of preserving letterpress printing. Through this collaboration, The St. Louis Mercantile Library has acquired The Printery, one of the most revered modern American private press studios. Central Print will operate The Printery Lab, on Central Print’s premises, to preserve and make available for use this high-quality letterpress equipment and type inventory.
The Printery, founded by professional book designer Kay Michael Kramer in 1970, is an award-winning private press that produced incredibly beautiful books and broadsides in St. Louis. The joint plan of Central Print and the Mercantile Library to preserve The Printery will permit its continued use in keeping with Kay’s high standards and traditions in the book arts.
We are recreating the press in its original configuration here at Central Print. Trained printers will have an opportunity to used the pristine equipment and extensive type collection when we open the lab. Stay tuned for updates!
We are seeking donations to Central Print to preserve, maintain, and facilitate use of The Printery at Central Print. Your donation will provide essential financial support which will allow this opportunity to succeed.
While supplies last, The Printery has offered limited edition books and broadsides for contributions received.
In addition, all donors at the $250 and above level will be honored as members of The Founding Donor’s Circle, and will receive special opportunities with respect to The Printery and other Central Print activities.
