Introduction to Bookbinding is designed to teach foundational bookbinding skills through hands-on practice. Over the course of the workshop, you’ll create four distinct book structures—each chosen to introduce a specific set of techniques. By the end, you'll leave with four beautiful handmade books and a solid toolkit of bookbinding methods to build upon.

The book structures we’ll explore are:

  • Pamphlet Stitch

  • Double Signature Sewn as One with Flexi-End Cover

  • Case-In Pamphlet

  • Multi-Section Case-In Book

All materials and tools needed for the class will be provided.

Eli Ball is a bookbinder based in the St. Louis area and a diploma student at the American Academy of Bookbinding in Colorado. His work explores both traditional fine leather binding and books with interactive elements. Eli occasionally teaches classes and oversees book production for Atrium Press, an independent publishing house. He is drawn to bookbinding for its ability to weave together multiple voices—those of the writer, printer, and binder—into a single, beautiful object.
