Analog Counterculture & Low-Tech Publishing: The Obsolete Press Mimeograph Revolution Roadshow

Before there was social media, even before photo-copied zines, artists and writers found ways to publish their creations using stencil prints (mimeographs) dye-transfer prints (hectographs) and alcohol transfers (spirit duplication). Developed during the industrial revolution for copying documents without the use of a printing press, these quick and cheap techniques have been used by Avant Guard artists and poets, political dissidents and underground publishers since the 1800s.

Join Rich Dana and Leisha Stanek of Obsolete Press for an evening of hands-on demos and learn how you can use pre-Xerox/Risograph copier technologies to publish small editions of zines, chapbooks, prints, and flyers free from the constraints of the publishing industry, corporate social media platforms and A.I. algorithms.

Participants will learn the basics of the technologies as well as DIY techniques that they can use, even without a machine! We will use old school tools- markers, pens, typewriters, letter stencils- to create content and use these low-tech printing methods to reproduce individual pages and create a collaborative zine.
